Lt. Steven P. Demo was a Portsmouth Police Officer who was assigned to the NH Drug Task Force as the Operations Officer. Steve was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1990’s. While undergoing treatment, Steve noted the expenses that come along with medical visits and stays that aren’t covered by insurance. In 1999, Steve’s family and friends held a BBQ to raise money to send him and his family to Disney Wold. From this event $52,000 was raised. From that money, Steve was able to establish a trust for his three children, Trevor, Brendan and Cassidy and then presented a portion of the money to the NH Police Association to start a cancer fund to help his brother and sister officers in their fights against the disease. Steve passed away on July 9th, 2000 after a long battle with cancer. In his memory, the Steven P. Demo Cops with Cancer Fund was created. Today it is funded by donations, an annual golf tournament and sponsorships. The goal of this fund is to provide financial assistance to officers and their families to help pay for additional expenses such as lodging, food, gas, etc. while seeking treatment.
